Miami euphoria fades, RBC's merger premium, Morgan Stanley puts numbers on Robotaxi, Optimus talent walks, Autopilot data missing

Sources (7)

At $402.90, TSLA is priced entirely on narrative sentiment, and the share price has come loose from the fundamentals: up one day and down the next proves there is no anchor. 85% of RBC's $500 target is premium that rests on an assumed SpaceX deal that has not been announced.

Morgan Stanley, putting numbers on Robotaxi for the first time, sees only 30,000 vehicles by 2030, an order of magnitude short of ARK's narrative of Robotaxi making up nearly 90% of enterprise value in 2029. Optimus talent departures, European rivals and OpenAI's robotics unit are eroding the scarcity premium. Data is missing from a fatal Autopilot crash, so the legal tail risk keeps building. Hard tests: gross margin in the 22 Jul Q2 results, and Optimus 3 production at the end of July.

Key evidence

  • TSLA closed at $402.90 on 7 Jul, down 4%, giving back ground after the 6.62% jump to $419.77 on 6 Jul (intraday $432). The only catalysts were Robotaxi enthusiasm in Miami and European registrations, nothing to do with the 480,126 deliveries actually reported
  • RBC's Tom Narayan raised his target from $475 to $500, admitting that only 15% of the $500 comes from TSLA's intrinsic value; the remaining 25-30% premium rests on an assumed all-stock acquisition by SpaceX (based on unconfirmed media reports). That matches Jefferies' warning that the hotter the merger talk, the weaker the standalone valuation anchor
  • Morgan Stanley put numbers on Robotaxi scale for the first time. It kept Equalweight and $415 (implying -1%), and forecasts 1,500 vehicles by end-2026 and 30,000 by 2030, with Phoenix, Orlando, Tampa and Las Vegas the next cities. ARK's model has Robotaxi at nearly 90% of enterprise value in 2029: a huge gap between the quantified path and the valuation narrative
  • Morningstar raised its fair value from $425 to $450 at the same time, admitting it had underestimated the 2 Jul sell-off
  • Former core Tesla Optimus scientist Remi Cadene has founded humanoid robot company UMA in Paris, and the 9-person team already has a Prototype V0. Tesla itself aims for low-volume production of Optimus Gen3 this summer (July-August) on a converted Model S/X line in Fremont
  • New investigation: in a fatal Autopilot crash, the crash snapshot data that would reconstruct what the system perceived is missing. Tesla's outside lawyers acknowledged in writing in November 2024 that the data passed to Tesla contained no crash video or snapshots. This echoes the Dutch HW3 claim and the twin federal investigations in the Katy case

Catalysts to watch

  • 22 Jul Q2 results (gross margin is make-or-break)
  • Late July to early August: low-volume Optimus Gen3 production starts in Fremont
  • Next Robotaxi cities: Phoenix, Orlando, Tampa and Las Vegas

Risks

  • Priced on narrative sentiment: on any day without a catalyst the shares give back gains, with no fundamental support
  • Merger-premium trap: 85% of the $500 target depends on an all-stock SpaceX acquisition that has not been announced; if it does not happen, the valuation anchor collapses
  • Gap between quantified Robotaxi scale and the narrative: Morgan Stanley's 30,000 vehicles (2030) against ARK's 90% of enterprise value (2029). The realistic path is far slower than the valuation assumes
  • Optimus's scarcity premium is eroding: talent departures (UMA in Paris), OpenAI's robotics unit and European rivals
  • Autopilot legal tail risk: the dispute over missing crash data keeps building, alongside the Dutch HW3 claim and the twin federal investigations in the Katy case
  • If Q2 gross margin disappoints, narrative sentiment and fundamentals take a hit together
