Megapack 3 quantifies the energy pivot
Megapack 3 mass production at Brookshire (5 MWh per unit, energy density up 28%, 50 GWh a year, 16 months from groundbreaking to output) is the first hard production evidence backing the shift from cars to energy.

Energy is Tesla's highest-margin segment (Q2 20.4% versus 16.3% for auto) and its fastest-growing, and the unit density gains directly cut cost and lift margin. That matters at a time when auto operating margin has collapsed to 1.4% and free cash flow has turned negative. But the AI-option premium supporting the equity is being marked down. Polymarket now prices a SpaceX merger by end-2026 at only about 17.5% to 18% (5.1% by 30 Sep), a sharp reversal from Deepwater's 90% multi-year read and Kalshi's 60% to 74%. The EU FSD vote is now dated 6 Oct (TCMV, which needs 55% of member states and 65% of the population). France has joined Sweden in opposition, and the Dutch RDW is refusing to publish safety data, citing Tesla's confidentiality request. The valuation gap is stark. Wedbush anchors on $600 (nearly double) on FSD, Robotaxi and Optimus, while prediction markets give Optimus commercialisation only about 15% odds and rate TSLA's current price as only about 15% likely to be fair. Fundamentals (Q2 EPS miss of about 38%, operating margin of about 1%, an 18% fall the next day) are decoupled from a price still held up by unrealised AI options, and the near-term AI options are being repriced lower this week.
Key evidence
- Megapack 3 mass production is live at Brookshire, Texas (announced on 5 Aug): 5 MWh per unit, energy density up about 28% on the previous generation, designed capacity of 50 GWh a year, a dedicated Megapack 3 line, and 16 months from groundbreaking to output.
- Energy segment gross margin in Q2 was 20.4% against 16.3% for auto, making it the highest-margin and fastest-growing segment. Megapack 3 density gains directly cut $/kWh and lift margin.
- Megapack is already integrated into the Texas grid through Ørsted's 250 MW / 500 MWh project (Electrek).
- Polymarket's 'Tesla-SpaceX merger announced by end-2026' contract stands at about 17.5% to 18%, and at only 5.1% by 30 Sep. That compares with Deepwater/Munster at about 90% over multiple years and Kalshi at 60% by 2028 and 74% by May 2027.
- On 6 Aug Musk denied ever discussing a sale, spin-off or closure of the China business. The merger narrative and the China spin-off rumour are both losing near-term price support.
- The EU FSD TCMV vote is now dated 6 Oct 2026. It requires 55% of member states and 65% of the population, with a November UN backup path if it fails.

- France joins Sweden in rejecting FSD on safety grounds, doubling the opposition camp to 2 countries.
- The Dutch RDW refuses to publish its FSD safety assessment, citing commercial confidentiality requested by Tesla. The transparency dispute overhangs the 6 Oct vote.
- Tesla is running a 2-month free FSD trial in Europe to force market penetration ahead of the vote.
- 24/7 Wall St, 6 Aug: Wedbush (Ives) anchors on a $600 price target, nearly double the current price, and is all in on FSD monetisation, the Robotaxi network and Optimus scale.
- The same piece says prediction markets give Optimus commercialisation about 15% odds and rate TSLA's current price as only about 15% likely to be fair.
- Reality check: Q2 EPS missed by about 38%, operating margin was about 1%, and the stock fell 18% the next day.
- Price: TSLA closed on 5 Aug at about $321.55, and GF Value flags it as only about 2.8% undervalued. The stock is down 23% over the past month and 27% year to date, the worst of the Magnificent 7. In pre-market trading on 6 Aug it bounced slightly as the EU FSD decision draws near.
Catalysts to watch
- 6 Oct 2026: EU TCMV FSD vote. It needs 55% of member states and 65% of the population. France and Sweden are already opposed, and there is the Dutch transparency dispute
- November: UN backup path for FSD if the TCMV vote fails
- Megapack 3 ramp at Brookshire (designed capacity of 50 GWh a year), with quarter-on-quarter energy revenue and margin prints
- The Polymarket and Kalshi merger-odds tape: near-term contracts are already being repriced lower, and another leg down is likely if there is no announcement by 30 Sep
- The China business spin-off rumour cycle: Musk has denied it so far, but it remains a recurring headline risk
Risks
- The EU FSD vote fails on 6 Oct, with France and Sweden a solid no. European FSD monetisation is pushed to the 2027 UN path or later, which kills the near-term FSD revenue thesis
- No SpaceX merger announcement in the near term. Polymarket is already at 18%, and the AI-option premium would be repriced further if the silence extends
- Optimus commercialisation stalls. The prediction market shows only 15% confidence, and the Wedbush $600 price target collapses without it
- Auto margin recovery fails to materialise. Operating margin is at 1.4%, free cash flow is negative and EPS missed by 38%, and the energy segment cannot offset the auto collapse fast enough
- Headlines about a China spin-off or sale destabilise the stock. Musk denies them, but the rumour cycle keeps returning
- The Dutch RDW transparency dispute becomes a broader EU credibility issue for FSD safety claims
