Cybercab Unboxed manufacturing process revealed, China August retail down 3 months in a row…
One positive on the supply side is offset by 2 negatives, one from demand and one from competitors. The Cybercab's officially announced Unboxed process (a production line half the size, assembly 5 times faster) is hard evidence that low-cost unit economics now extend from the design to the production line. It is still launch-event talk, though:

Unboxed has never reached volume production and there are no third-party output figures. Tesla's retail sales in China in August were 50,047 vehicles, down 12.4% year on year, a third straight monthly fall. To keep Q3 flat, September alone would need to beat the all-time record of 91,998 vehicles. With a RMB 10,000 promotion on Model Y inventory on top, the peak in domestic demand is now confirmed in retail figures as well as wholesale. XPeng's IRON humanoid robot has come off the line, with large-scale production targeted for the end of 2026. That directly offsets the scarcity premium on Optimus, whose production has slipped from 'thousands of units this year' at the start of the year to 'production starts in the coming months', with commercial sales in the second half of 2027. The 3 threads share one focus: whether the Q3 report in October gives the Cybercab's actual output, specific Optimus production numbers and the effect of China ASP on gross margin.
Key evidence
- Cybercab: the official Tesla Robotaxi account revealed the Unboxed manufacturing process for the first time on 8 Sep. Body modules are assembled in parallel and joined into the complete frame at the end. The company says it 'halves the line', and 24/7 Wall St. cites it as about 5 times faster than conventional car manufacturing.
- Cybercab timeline: unveiling on 3 Sep, paid rides on 4 Sep, deleted production-guidance wording on 6 Sep, manufacturing process on 8 Sep. It extends the low-cost unit economics theme of 'the lightest and most efficient ever, serving a price below $30,000' from design to the production line.
- Risks in the Unboxed process: Musk made the same promise at the 2023 investor day, and it has never actually reached volume production. It is being proven on one model only, the Cybercab, with yield and ramp-up unknown. Compare the Cybertruck precedent (failed production ramp, utilisation below 10%).
- China retail data (CPCA, 9 Sep): Tesla's August retail sales in China were 50,047 vehicles, down 12.4% year on year, the third straight month of annual decline. Cumulative retail sales for January to August were 316,251 vehicles, down 12.44% year on year.
- Threshold to keep Q3 flat: EV media calculate that September deliveries would need to reach 91,998 vehicles, more than Tesla's highest-ever monthly deliveries in China.
- Wholesale and retail diverge: the wholesale figure of 86,166 vehicles (up 3.57%), reported on 8 Sep, was held up by exports (China's NEV exports in August were up about 155% year on year) and kept a ten-month run of gains going. Strip out exports and domestic retail has fallen for 3 months, so the signal that local demand has peaked has moved from wholesale to retail.

- End-of-quarter promotion announced on 7 Sep: RMB 10,000 (about $1,475) off inventory Model Ys, with Tesla giving up margin to clear stock.
- XPeng's IRON humanoid robot (Electrek and CnEVPost, 8 Sep): XPeng has opened what it calls the 'world's first automated humanoid robot production line' in Guangzhou, and IRON has rolled off it. It targets large-scale production by the end of 2026, first for its own use in stores and campuses. Sales and deliveries in China and overseas have to wait until 2027. It uses a solid-liquid hybrid battery (all-solid-state has been delayed).
- Optimus timetable slipping: production is expected to start 'in the coming months' and commercial sales are targeted for the second half of 2027, a steady cut from 'thousands of units this year' at the start of the year.
- Tesla's hardware moat is intact: in-house hardware design, reuse of the FSD neural network and its own mass-production system. OpenAI and XPeng lack comparable hardware production capability in the short term.
Catalysts to watch
- Q3 2026 results (October): watch the Cybercab's actual output and production timeline, specific Optimus output, and whether China ASP is dragged down further by promotions, hitting gross margin
- September China delivery data: if below 91,998 (very likely), that confirms quarter-on-quarter pressure in China for Q3
- Yield and ramp-up curve of the Cybercab Unboxed process: if volume production delivers, it is a genuine fundamental cost cut, and if it fails it repeats the Cybertruck experience
- Whether XPeng's IRON reaches large-scale production by the end of 2026: if on schedule, the loss of Optimus's scarcity premium deepens
Risks
- The supply-side process positive is not a valuation-level catalyst: a good-looking Unboxed blueprint does not mean volume production has been delivered, and there are no third-party output figures to back the company's claims.
- The peak in China demand has moved from wholesale to retail data. The diversion of sales into exports is a structural variable and not a collapse in demand, but both sets of figures confirm that domestic sales are being driven by price cuts and not by a real acceleration in demand.
- Delay to Optimus production is a negative: from 'thousands of units this year' at the start of the year to 'production only starts in the coming months', and the pace of delivery is itself a source of valuation pressure.
- XPeng's IRON also has to wait until 2027 for commercial use, and yield and performance in volume production are yet to be proven. It is not about to scale immediately, and the extent of the loss of scarcity premium depends on how fast it delivers.
- Breaking the all-time record in September to hold the quarter is objectively very hard, so Q3 China deliveries will probably come under quarter-on-quarter pressure.
