First Cybercab built with in-house cathode, 1,000 Megapacks from Shanghai with capacity doubled in 5 months, Nevada Semi plant unveiled

Three gradual positives on supply and cost. (1) The first Cybercab built with in-house Austin cathode powder has come off the line. That takes battery vertical integration a step further and, together with the rare-earth-free motor, pushes unit cost towards the targets of under $30,000 and under $0.20 a mile.

(2) The Shanghai Megafactory has produced a cumulative 1,000 Megapacks and doubled capacity in 5 months. Musk called it a gem in a CCTV interview, and energy storage is the highest-margin business (Q2 gross margin 20.4% against 16.3% for automotive). (3) The high-capacity Semi plant in Sparks, Nevada was unveiled on 24 Sep, with a design capacity of 50,000 trucks a year and volume production due to begin in 2026. All three are gradual positives on supply and cost, not catalysts that have yet been delivered.

Key evidence

  • On 23 Sep Giga Texas built the first production Cybercab using in-house Austin cathode powder. Cathode powder is the costliest and most concentrated link in the battery supply chain (long reliant on Chinese refining), and Tesla is bringing it onshore alongside its in-house 4680 cells.
  • Tesla says the Cybercab's new single-motor drive unit is nearly 40% more efficient than the Model Y, making it the most efficient production EV certified to date. The drive-unit line turns out one unit every 10 seconds (the recruitment-post figure should be discounted).
  • This follows the rare-earth-free Cybercab drive motor covered on 7 Sep, which saves about $1,000 a unit.
  • The Shanghai Megafactory has produced about 1,000 Megapacks in total and doubled capacity within 5 months (disclosed by Musk in CCTV and CGTN interviews on 23-24 Sep).
  • Energy storage gross margin was 20.4% in Q2 against 16.3% for automotive. Shanghai is the third-largest storage base after Lathrop and Brookshire, and the Q2 report named Shanghai as supporting record storage deployments in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
  • On the eve of the US-China leaders' meeting, Musk publicly praised the Shanghai plant, Chinese manufacturing and the Chinese team, a counter to the headwinds of tighter Chinese regulation, BYD's export onslaught and falling domestic retail sales.

  • On the evening of 24 Sep (PDT), Tesla held a Semi Rollout in Sparks, Nevada, formally unveiling its dedicated high-capacity Semi plant of about 1.7 million square feet.
  • This follows the 2,500-truck order covered on 24 Sep, the largest electric heavy-truck order ever, and the design capacity of 50,000 trucks a year. The first vehicle off the high-capacity line was built in April, and the July shareholder letter said Semi would enter volume production in 2026.

Catalysts to watch

  • Cybercab genuinely scaling up and delivering driverless passenger service (the key sticking point)
  • Yield at scale and cost dilution from in-house Austin cathode powder
  • Quarterly output from the Shanghai Megafactory (rather than cumulative milestones)
  • The pace of the ramp from unveiling to full output at the Nevada Semi plant (against Einride's 500-truck order, of which only about 75 trucks are due in 2026)
  • Whether the 2026 volume-production line for Semi is met

Risks

  • In-house cathode is a symbolic first-unit milestone, and yield at scale and cost dilution will take time
  • The 40% efficiency, 'most efficient' and 10-second cycle time are all Tesla's own figures and should be discounted
  • 1,000 Megapacks is a cumulative milestone, not quarterly output, and at about 3.9MWh a unit the scale is not large
  • Musk's praise for the Shanghai plant has a public-relations element and does not change the weak fundamentals of share and exports on the China auto side
  • A Semi unveiling is not full output. 50,000 trucks is a design ceiling, the plant is still in an early ramp, and Tesla itself has warned that the volume ramp will be slow. Each truck costs about $300,000
  • Overall the three items are gradual positives on supply and cost, not valuation-level catalysts
