Austin Cybercab fleet passes 300, Dallas named next city, and Digital Optimus targets generalisation across games
The supply and operations side edges forward. Tesla's official Robotaxi account and AI head Ashok Elluswamy claim the Austin Cybercab fleet is now 300-plus (8x in one month), and name Dallas as the next commercial Cybercab city (soon, with no date).

Separately, Musk showed Digital Optimus (a pure software agent, not a humanoid) about halfway through Diablo and strong at Counter-Strike, using only pixels and a mouse and keyboard, with League of Legends in training. The goal is generalisation across games. The game demo attacks the AI-generalisation bottleneck, but only on the software side.
Key evidence
- Tesla's official Robotaxi X account: the Austin Cybercab fleet has scaled to 300-plus one month after launch, 8x the first month
- AI software head Elluswamy quote-posted it and named Dallas as the next commercial Cybercab city (soon, with no date given)
- Dallas currently runs a Robotaxi service on Model Y with early FSD v15, so Cybercab would be a dedicated upgrade
- This follows the Texas DMV data on 10 Oct, when registrations jumped from 169 to 319 in a single day. Today's news escalates from registrations to an official claim of vehicles in service
- TeslaNorth flagged an open question: Tesla did not disclose how many of the 300-plus run truly driverless and how many with safety monitors. A crowdsourced count on 23 Sep found just 8 truly driverless
- Austin remains the only city where a Cybercab with no steering wheel can be hailed
Show 4 more
- Musk on X: Digital Optimus (a pure software agent that reuses the FSD and physical-AI networks) now gets through about half of Diablo and performs well in Counter-Strike, using only screen pixels and a mouse and keyboard
- League of Legends is in training, and the stated goal is to generalise across all games
- Tesla at the same time opened a hiring post for a real-time game ML engineer
- Context: a 26 Sep report confirmed that the physical Optimus can only do narrow supervised tasks and does not generalise
Catalysts to watch
- Commercial Cybercab launch in Dallas (no date; Elluswamy only said soon)
- Future official disclosure of the truly driverless share of the 300-plus Austin fleet
- Digital Optimus generalising to League of Legends and other titles
- Consumer sales of the physical Optimus, which Tesla guides for 2H 2027 at the earliest
Risks
- The 300-plus figure lumps monitored and truly driverless vehicles together. The 23 Sep crowdsourced count saw only 8 fully autonomous units
- Dallas Cybercab has no committed date, just 'soon'
- Waymo is already mature across multiple cities, while Tesla's wheel-less Cybercab is still in a single city
- Generalisation in games is not the same as fine-motor generalisation in the physical world. They are two separate gates
- Digital Optimus is a capability demo, not revenue; commercial sale comes in 2H 2027 at the earliest
- The physical Optimus is still held back by hand yield and physical generalisation, which a software game demo does not change
