Q3: auto margin ex credits about 18.1%, 1.74 million Active FSD Subscriptions, Cybercab to Dallas next month, Optimus line in production…

The Q3 print (21 Oct, after the close) resets the Tesla story on 4 fronts. (1) Auto gross margin excluding regulatory credits recovered to about 18.1% (Q2 about 16.3%, a year earlier about 15.4%), while credits collapsed to $113 million from $417 million a year earlier. Credits did not drive the recovery:

on the call the CFO attributed it to a higher mix of deliveries in Asia Pacific. (2) FSD monetisation accelerated. The attach rate on new cars in North America is above 75%, up about 20 percentage points quarter on quarter. 'Active FSD Subscriptions' reached 1.74 million (up 67% year on year, with about 260,000 net additions, the most ever), on the same definition as the 10 million milestone in the 2025 CEO pay plan. The figure includes upfront purchases, and about half of the paid base is monthly subscriptions. In Europe FSD is live in 9 countries, with more than 100,000 users and 160 million km driven. (3) Robotaxi gets its first timeline tied to a specific quarter. The Cybercab, which today runs only in Austin, arrives in Dallas next month, making Dallas its second city; Tesla's Robotaxi service has run there with Model Y cars since April 2026. Owner vehicles join the fleet around Q2 2027 via V15. The CFO said Tesla has not yet reached its $0.30-a-mile cost goal but sees a path to it. Texas Cybercab capacity exceeds 125,000 a year, but the fleet actually deployed is about 1,000 according to NHTSA filings. (4) Optimus has moved from prototype to production. The high-volume line at Fremont is producing the first production-grade robots, the Texas Optimus plant is under construction, deliveries to external customers are about 1 year away and a pace of 20,000 a week is at least a year away. Energy revenue was $2.88 billion (down 16% year on year), hit by tariff-related customer refunds: an accounting effect rather than weaker demand, with 2027 Megapack capacity nearly sold out. Energy gross margin rose to 33.1% from 20.4% in Q2, mainly on one-time items: tariff refunds recognised in the quarter and warranty true-downs. Capex guidance was cut from $25 billion to about $20 billion. Up to $30 billion of borrowing capacity, secured during the quarter and filed with the SEC on 29 Sep, will go unused this year, which signals heavier spending in 2027-2028. R&D was $2.76 billion (up 69% year on year) and operating margin was squeezed to 2.6% from 5.8% a year earlier: a deliberate choice, not operating deterioration.

Key evidence

  • Auto gross margin excluding regulatory credits was about 18.1% in Q3 (Q2 about 16.3%, a year earlier about 15.4%), calculated from the income statement
  • Regulatory credit revenue was only $113 million, against $417 million a year earlier. The stream is effectively drying up, so credits did not drive the margin recovery; on the call the CFO attributed it to a higher mix of deliveries in Asia Pacific
  • Deliveries were 486,532 (down 2% YoY). Shareholder letter: the passenger-car order backlog is the highest in 4 years, and the bottleneck in auto production is battery supply, not demand
  • FSD attach rate on new vehicles in North America above 75%, up about 20pp QoQ
  • 'Active FSD Subscriptions' were 1.74 million (up 67% YoY), with about 260,000 net additions in Q3, the most ever. The definition matches the 10 million milestone in the 2025 CEO pay plan: it includes upfront purchases and excludes trials. About half of the paid base is monthly subscriptions
  • FSD is live in 9 European countries, where more than 100,000 users have driven 160 million km in total

  • At 200,000 to 260,000 net additions a quarter, the 10 million target is still far off, so the proxy's 'not probable' classification is reasonable
  • Unsupervised Robotaxi cumulative miles are close to 2 million, 8 times the previous quarter's level
  • Ashok Elluswamy, VP of AI Software: the Cybercab arrives in Dallas next month, its first city outside Austin (Tesla's Robotaxi service has run in Dallas with Model Y cars since April 2026). Owner vehicles are expected to join the Robotaxi fleet around Q2 2027 via V15
  • CFO Vaibhav Taneja: Tesla has not yet reached its $0.30-a-mile cost goal but sees a path to it; more cities for Cybercab this year
  • Shareholder letter: annual Cybercab capacity in Texas exceeds 125,000, yet NHTSA filings put the official Robotaxi fleet at only about 1,000 vehicles, a big gap between capacity and deployment
  • Musk: 'majority of Cybercabs will be Tesla-owned, operated as a ride-service fleet'
  • The hard milestone for option vesting moves from vague to concrete: owner vehicles joining the fleet via V15 in Q2 2027
  • NHTSA has 3 open investigations, and the response to its Cybercab certification inquiry is due on 30 Oct: the regulator still sets the pace
  • Shareholder letter: the high-volume Optimus line at Fremont is in production, with the first 'production-grade' robots coming off the line; the Texas Optimus plant is under construction
  • Musk: most of the equipment for a line with annual capacity of 1 million units has arrived at Fremont; the ramp to 20,000 a week will take 'at least a year, maybe more'; the remaining design challenges are mostly in the hands and fingers
  • Musk: the AI5 chip should reach Optimus around April 2027; deliveries to external customers are about 1 year away, starting with dangerous and repetitive industrial work
  • Context (see 15 Oct): China's 3 leading makers shipped about 19,000 humanoids in H1, against a few hundred for Tesla. The production gap will not close soon; Tesla is betting on AI5 and general capability for the competition after H2 2027
  • Energy revenue was $2.88 billion (down 16% YoY); the shareholder letter attributes part of the drop to 'tariff-related customer refunds' without disclosing the amount
  • Energy deployments were 13.7 GWh (up 10% YoY). Gross margin rose to 33.1% from 20.4% in Q2, mainly on one-time items: tariff refunds recognised in the quarter and warranty true-downs
  • On the call: 2027 Megapack capacity is 'almost sold out', and management expects storage margins to rise materially
  • The Texas Megafactory is online (planned 50 GWh), and the first Megapacks built entirely with Nevada-made LFP cells have shipped (7 GWh, early in the ramp)
  • Full-year capex guidance was cut from $25 billion to about $20 billion; about $13 billion was spent in the first 9 months, implying about $7 billion in Q4
  • Borrowing capacity of up to $30 billion was secured during the quarter (filed with the SEC on 29 Sep) and will not be drawn this year; cash and investments $45.4 billion; free cash flow $1.53 billion
  • R&D was $2.76 billion (up 69% YoY); operating margin was only 2.6%, against 5.8% a year earlier
  • Tool-in at the Austin chip fab starts in H1 2027, with first test chips targeted for May-June 2027

Catalysts to watch

  • 30 Oct: deadline for the response to NHTSA's Cybercab certification inquiry

Risks

  • NHTSA still sets the pace for Robotaxi: 3 open investigations and the certification inquiry due on 30 Oct
  • Gap between capacity and deployment: Texas Cybercab capacity of more than 125,000 a year against about 1,000 vehicles actually in the Robotaxi fleet filed with NHTSA
  • Active FSD Subscriptions stand at 1.74 million against the 10 million pay milestone, which the proxy itself labels 'not probable'
  • Musk says the Optimus ramp to 20,000 a week will take 'at least a year, maybe more', and the design of the hands and fingers is still unsettled
  • Chinese humanoid competitors shipped about 19,000 in H1, against a few hundred for Tesla: the production gap persists

  • The R&D surge squeezed operating margin to 2.6% from 5.8% a year earlier, and the income statement will stay ugly through the heavy-spending years
  • The $30 billion borrowing capacity signals capex in 2027-2028 much heavier than in 2026
  • Battery supply is the bottleneck in auto production: the ramp of 4680 and in-house LFP cells is the real swing factor for volume growth
  • Undisclosed tariff-related customer refunds hurt the optics of energy revenue
