Tesla Semi's European version goes live on its German website with 2027 deliveries…

Sources (6)

2 signals, one on supply and one on demand, landed on the same day. (1) Tesla's German website has put up the specifications of the European Semi and, for the first time, a delivery date anchor of 'from 2027', putting in writing the verbal narrative of 22 Aug about entering Europe.

(2) CPCA's August data show BYD topping China's NEV passenger car exports with a 35.4% share, while Tesla's exports fell 45.5% year on year to a 7.0% share, only 4th. The narrative that 'exports are propping up Shanghai wholesale' has been taken apart: domestic retail is down 12.4% for a third month and exports are down 45.5%, so both legs are weakening at once.

Key evidence

  • Tesla's German website put up the European Semi on 11 Sep: a single standard-range version with an 822 kWh battery, range of 550 km at a full 40-tonne load (consumption of 1.0 kWh/km), peak charging of 800 kW (about 60% of range back in 30 minutes), unladen weight of about 9,100 kg, deliveries 'from 2027', still built in the US, and cameras in place of rear-view mirrors on the European version.
  • The European version is standard range (550 km at 40 tonnes), against the US long-range version (805 km on an 822 kWh pack, but quoted at 37.2 tonnes). With the same battery, range is discounted under a heavier load, which makes this a real-world specification and not a marketing figure.
  • This follows the official confirmation on 22 Aug that Semi is coming to Europe and the news of 25 Aug that the Nevada plant, with capacity of 50,000 vehicles a year, will be unveiled on 24 Sep. Today adds the first firm delivery date for the European market.
  • CPCA data (CnEVPost, 10 Sep): BYD exported 183,746 vehicles in August, up 130.8% year on year and 5.8% month on month, with its export share rising from 32.2% in July to 35.4%.
  • Tesla China exported 36,119 vehicles, down 45.5% year on year, and its export share fell to 7.0%, 4th, behind BYD, Chery, SAIC-GM-Wuling and others.
  • The earlier framework that 'August NEV exports up 155% propped up the run of Shanghai wholesale gains' has been taken apart: Tesla's own exports have halved in absolute terms year on year, so the export leg itself is shrinking fast.

  • Both legs of the China business are weakening at once: domestic retail down 12.4% for a third month, and exports down 45.5%.
  • The price war in China's mass market has spread from the domestic market to overseas export channels, and BYD is directly squeezing out Tesla's export share.

Catalysts to watch

  • 24 Sep 2026: unveiling of the Nevada Semi plant with capacity of 50,000 vehicles a year (tied to the narrative of European deliveries in 2027)
  • Q3 2026 China delivery data: whether the weakness on both legs, domestic -12.4% and exports -45.5%, continues
  • 2027: earliest delivery of the European Semi (European price, launch countries and specific capacity not yet announced)
  • Later monthly CPCA data: whether Tesla China's export share continues to be squeezed by BYD

Risks

  • 'From 2027' is the earliest delivery date and not a ramp-up, and the Nevada plant is still in its early ramp (of Einride's 500 units, only about 75 are to be delivered in 2026, which already confirms the slow pace).
  • The European Semi website does not give a European price, launch countries or specific capacity, so this is a gradual positive on the supply side and not a valuation-level catalyst.
  • Tesla's Shanghai capacity is allocated around the world on its own rhythm, so monthly swings in exports include noise from quarterly production scheduling.
  • A 7% export share and 4th place is still meaningful volume and not a collapse, but the 45.5% year-on-year fall is hard first-hand evidence on demand and competition.
  • On the operating side it leans negative, and Q3 China and Europe deliveries need watching for drag from the fall in exports.
