Optimus at several hundred units a week but with yield problems, Semi volume production starts 7 years late…

Sources (6)

All three legs of the supply story moved today, but each is discounted by a hard constraint. Optimus has gone from orders and audits to an actual output rate, but hand yield and generalisation are not yet solved. Semi has gone from unveiling to Musk himself confirming volume production, but seven years late and still in an early ramp.

The EU-wide FSD vote set for 6 Oct has been pushed to December at the earliest, with only 7 of 27 member states in support. The overall effect is sentiment-level rather than delivered, and the first link in the chain that turns software into revenue has cracked again.

Key evidence

  • Optimus: Fremont is producing several hundred units a week (about ten times the Q2 rate), with a year-end target of 1,000 a week and a long-term goal of about 20,000 a week (The Information, Electrek and Ars Technica, 25 Sep).
  • The hand and forearm contain more than 100 screws and are still assembled by hand. Tactile sensors are unreliable, and a replaceable sensing-glove fix does not arrive until next year. Fixtures fail to align small-tolerance parts, causing heavy rework. Motors and precision gears still depend on Chinese suppliers.
  • What is being built now is V3, not the version meant for commercialisation. Most of the robots are used only for internal testing, training and data collection, and cannot generalise. The official line still anchors external commercial sales to the second half of 2027.
  • Semi: at the start-of-production ceremony at the Sparks plant on the evening of 24 Sep, Musk confirmed that high volume production has begun. Design capacity is 50,000 trucks a year, about seven years after the 2017 debut.
  • Alongside it came the largest electric heavy-truck order ever, for 2,500 trucks (ZET SCALE, Microsoft and Pepsi), and European deliveries in 2027. Of Einride's 500-truck order, only about 75 are due in 2026 (a slow early ramp).
  • At about $300,000 a truck, Tesla itself has warned that the volume ramp will be slow.

  • FSD: the EU's TCMV agenda for 6 Oct lists only FSD 'discussions' with no vote, and the decision on EU-wide approval has been pushed to December at the earliest (Reuters and Electrek, 25 Sep).
  • Only 7 of 27 member states currently support EU-wide approval of FSD. Passage needs at least 15, so support is only about half of what is required.

Catalysts to watch

  • Whether Optimus reaches the year-end target of 1,000 units a week
  • Optimus hand yield and the tactile-glove fix (due next year)
  • The pace towards external commercial sales of Optimus in the second half of 2027
  • The ramp of Semi to full output of 50,000 trucks a year (of Einride's 500-truck order, only about 75 are due in 2026)
  • Semi deliveries in Europe in 2027

  • The EU TCMV vote on FSD in December (whether it can reach the threshold of 15 states)
  • FSD approvals extending country by country (7 countries so far)

Risks

  • Optimus has yet to clear two hard hurdles, hand yield and AI generalisation, and V3 is not the commercial version
  • The idea that 80% of company value comes from Optimus is still a narrative, and a production ramp does not mean the robots can do useful work
  • The start of Semi volume production is not full output of 50,000 trucks, and the early ramp is slow
  • The seven-year delay on Semi itself says something about the pace of delivery
  • The 6 Oct calendar anchor for FSD has been pushed back by at least two months, which undercuts the bulls' regulatory premise

  • Country-by-country FSD approvals have had no visible effect on local sales (historical observation)
  • A single EU-wide approval in Europe is not feasible in the short term
